I just got an email from a friend of mine.  She wanted to pass along some information about how to get another good deal with the Hasbro coupons on playsaver.com.

I love those hasbro coupons. Wanted to pass along, if you still have any monopoly ones, Wal-mart did have Star Wars monoploy board games in their clearance section for $11 (i think). (they also had some other versions I can't remember) They are really cool and would make a good gift for the 8-12 year old set if you have a gift need there. Also, the monopoly card game is lots of fun. We've been playing that a lot since it moves so much faster than the board game.

Don't Forget about KMart Super Double Coupons Next Week!

For some reason, it looks like Elizabeth A. emphasized that the Shop Your Way Rewards card must be swiped (or input into the computer) FIRST - make sure you do that in order to get the double coupons.  

And be on the lookout for high-value coupons that will be great doublers for next week.  It says that you can do 5 per day, so I'm thinking I'll be going to KMart pretty much every day next week!  :)

What Does Couponing Cost You?

Did she say what does couponing cost me?  Doesn't she mean what does couponing save me?? 

Yes, I did say cost.  It's true that using coupons can save money - a lot of money.  But have you ever thought about what the cost of couponing is?  When I first learned about couponing, I found myself doing, thinking, and eating things that turned out to be unhealthy.  I think couponing is a hobby/sport/past-time (call it what you will) that can get you in some trouble if you're not careful about it.  I'll explain.

1. Couponing can cost you lots of time.  It's true - it takes time to clip coupons.  How much time you spend and how you spend your time clipping coupons varies greatly from person to person.  But as the saying goes, it's possible to have too much of a good thing.  I'll admit that when I started couponing, I wasn't very efficient with it.  I took a long time poring over the coupon inserts, searching out couponing blogs and matchups, and filing my coupons in my organizer.  But I have a toddler.  A toddler who doesn't like for me to spend hours on the computer or fooling with paper coupon inserts.  He wants me to interact and play with him.  I realized not long after I started that I needed to decide how long I would spend clipping, searching for, and organizing my coupons.  And I stick to that time allotment.  I know that sometimes I have to quit before I feel like I'm done, and that can sometimes cost me a little bit of money (when I don't have the coupons for the item that is on sale because I can't clip coupons every waking minute of the day).  It's important to set time limits so you don't take important time away from your family just to save a buck.
2. Couponing can cost you in nutrition/health.  Again, at the beginning, I was completely engulfed in saving money.  There are people out there who blog about how little they're spending on groceries and it's so little that even I can't fathom how they're doing it.  Unless they're buying the cheapest of the cheap foods just to stay within their very low food budget.  But I believe that some of the foods that you can get at the cheapest are about the worst things you can/should put in your body.  Processed, powdered foods can be purchased for pennies.  Does that mean that you should purchase, and live on, that kind of food?  I don't believe so.  After couponing for a few months, I noticed that I was buying more processed foods than I felt comfortable with.  And I've also read my fair share of articles that describe how bad processed foods are for our bodies.  One of the articles I read was about eating as few processed foods as possible.  The author of the article stated that shopping around the perimeter of the grocery store should help you purchase fewer processed foods.  It made sense to me, and I decided to try it.  Granted, everything on the perimeter of the store isn't the most healthy things for you (the beer is on the perimeter of my Kroger), so you'll still have to watch what you're getting.  But if you stick to fresh produce, fresh meats, and dairy (all generally on the perimeter of the store), you'll be much healthier in the end.  I've been eating those types of foods for about 6 months now, and I've gone down 2 pants sizes - without really trying.  (I say two but I'm not exactly sure how they count them - I went from needing to move up to a 14 to comfortably fitting in an 8 - a size I haven't been in since a while before my wedding....not bad!).  Even though my food budget is a little bit higher than it could be, I'm proud of the food I put on the table for my family.  And we are all a little healthier because of it.
3. Couponing can cost you mental anguish.  This might seem a little bit extreme to say, but I felt quite a lot of stress when I began couponing to save as much money as any other couponer that I encountered.  What pressure!!  Even though I was saving money, I was very hard on myself any time I forgot a coupon, spent more for any item than I could have (because of a sale at another store, or on a different week), or talked about couponing to anyone.  No matter how much I saved, I ached to save more.  Not necessarily because my family needed me to save more, but because I'm competitive.  I've learned that saving money is a good thing, and I know I'm doing better with budgeting and saving than I ever have in my whole life.  So I'm content with that.  I want to share knowledge, teach people how to use coupons and shop around for great deals, and be happy with the fact that I'm saving and helping others save.  And that's what the intent of my blog is. I hope I can teach people how to hold on to a little bit more of their money and feel great about their financial situation.  I tell people, "You spend your life making your money.  It ought to be important enough to you to care about how you spend that money."  That's all I want to do.

How has couponing cost you?  It has saved me tremendously, but only after I learned the ropes, got over the hump, and really looked at what my coupons were doing for me versus what they were taking away from me.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject.  Comment or send me an email!

KMart Double Coupon Event

From April 4, 2010 to April 10, 2010, KMart is offering an incredible Double Coupon Event!  They will double coupons up to $2.00!!!  There are some rules and restrictions, but it looks like you could get some incredible deals for an entire week!!  Not all stores in the nation will be participating, but I have read in an email that was sent to Amy Harvey at mymemphismommy.com from someone at the KMart Corporation that all stores in TN will participate.  Here are the rules:

• They will double up to 5 coupons per customer per day (so give them your high-value coupons first - the first 5 are the only ones that will double).
• KMart store coupons will not be doubled.
• KMart pharmacy coupons will not be doubled.
• Coupons up to and including $2 will be doubled.

Not a bad deal!!  I'll be saving some diaper coupons and running over there a few times that week!  Saving $4 per package of diapers will definitely make a trip to KMart worth the ride!  :)

Target put some new coupons on their website today - you can save up to $20 on the brands you see above!  Nice!  Click this link to get to the money saving coupons.  Most of them are manufacturer's coupons, so they can be used anywhere, not just at Target.  The only bad part about that is that you can't stack the coupons with any others that you already have.  But they're some nice coupons!

Get a $100 P&G Coupon Book!!!

I got an email this morning from P&G about an incredible promotion they're running right now!  If you spend $50 on any P&G products between Feb. 1 and April 15 (before tax or coupon discounts), keep your receipts, circle the amounts of the items, print and fill out a mail-in form, and send it to them, they'll send you a coupon book with $100 worth of coupons in it!!  I'm looking at the website with pictures of P&G products, and if I haven't spent $50 on them this month, I definitely will by April 15th!!  It includes Pampers, Iams dog food, Tide, and several other big ticket items that we usually get incredible deals on, so I think I can do this!!  Check out the information site here and see if you can get a $100 coupon booklet, too!!

*Updated to add: Did I mention that the Venus and Olay deals at Target that have been flying around the Internet completely qualify in this offer?  What's better than "spending" $50 on things that you're getting for free?!?  I'm about to head out to Target right now to get some free razors and Olay body wash, and you know that P&G will be getting my receipt for those items, even though I'll end up paying nothing for them (with the Target gift card offer and the Olay rebate)!  Gotta love it!

**Updated again to add that I'm a big doofus!!  You have to have the original receipt for both the Olay rebate and the P&G coupon book.  Doh!  Oh, well....I still got a great deal at Target.  They didn't have the Venus Breeze razors, but the coupons wouldn't have worked for them anyway because the coupon states that you have to purchase either a Venus Embrace or Venus Spa Breeze, which the Venus Breeze doesn't qualify for.  But I bought two Venus Spa Breeze razors for $4.99 each, and two Olay Body Washes that were priced at $5.84 each.  So I had the (2) $2 off coupons for any Venus Breeze razor and the 2 B1G1 free coupons for the Olay Body Wash.  I needed some Facial Moisturizer, and had another $1 off coupon, so I paid $6.44 for that.  But I bought three Olay items!  So I can get my $15 rebate and I ended up spending $12.  Not bad!  I'll take a few bucks.  I'm kinda bummed that the whole gift card deal didn't work out, but it's still a good deal.  And I figure that I'll submit for the Olay rebate now and keep collecting receipts with my P&G items, since I have until April 15th to purchase all of those.  With a toddler still in diapers, it's not going to be hard to reach $50 by the middle of April!

Coupon Ethics Posts

Angela over at The Coupon Project wrote a post today about some coupon ethics posts that she came across and wanted to share, and I wanted to do the same.  Coupon ethics are very important.  If we abuse our coupon privileges, we will eventually lose them.  And I know that we all save an awful lot of money using coupons, so I sure don't want to lose my privileges!!  Her post has a few links to the ethics articles she came across, and she has her own ethics post linked, too.  Take a look at the post here.

Kraft Is Breaking My Heart!!!

I got an email from Kraft First Taste today and in it, there's a big picture of a box of Oreo Cakesters and a link that says "Get your coupon."  For some reason, I thought the coupon was going to be mailed to me, so I didn't do anything yesterday besides enter my information to receive my coupon.  Anyway, I clicked on the link in the email that was sent today, and Kraft tells me that the offer was for yesterday and I don't have any offers now!! 

It's so not nice to dangle Oreo Cakesters in front of a girl and then yank them away the next day!!  Did anyone else make the mistake I did, or did you print off your coupon yesterday?  I'm so confused!  And I want a Cakester more than ever......now that I can't have it.

Coupon Lingo and Information

Do the abbreviations you see in all the coupon matchups confuse you?  Well, here's an easy guide to figure out what everything means.

Coupons are generally listed according to the insert in which they can be found.  For example, a coupon will be listed like this:

-$1/1 Kellogg's cereal (any variety) (1-3-10 SS)

The information at the beginning tells you the coupon details, and the part in the parentheses is what tells you where to find the coupon.  So this tells you that you can save $1 off the purchase of any (1) Kellogg's cereal and you can find the coupon in the Smart Source booklet that was included with the Sunday paper on January 3rd, 2010.

Here's a listing of some common coupon acronyms:

SS = Smart Source insert
RP = Red Plum insert
PG = Procter & Gamble insert
GM = General Mills insert
K = Kellogg's insert
MQ = Manufacturer's Coupon
TQ = Target Coupon
MIR = Mail In Rebate
RR = Register Rewards (at Walgreens)
Wags = Walgreens
OOP = Out of pocket
B1G1 = Buy 1 Get One
DND = Do Not Double - this is sometimes at the top of a coupon - some stores will still double the coupon if they have a coupon doubling policy in which the coupon fits, and the coupon bar code starts with either a "5" or a "9".  However, some stores will not double these coupons, so your savings depends on the store.
YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary - this is a way of saying that the price in your store may not be the price in the blogger's store, so you may not get the exact same deal.
GC = Gift Card
MM = Money Maker
WYB = when you buy

There are also different types of coupons and locations where they can be found. 

Blinkie = a coupon in a dispenser that is hanging on a shelf in the store (they often have a blinking light, hence the name "blinkie")

Catalina = this is a coupon that is printed at the register - it is often a reward for purchasing a certain type or number of items

Peelie = a coupon that can be found on the outside of a product and peeled off for immediate use

Store Coupon = a coupon that is issued by, and generally only accepted by, one store.  The top of the coupon will read "Store coupon" instead of manufacturer's coupon.  These can usually be stacked (meaning, you can use this coupon with a manufacturer's coupon, or stack the coupons, for one item) for even better savings.
